Understanding Shopify's Variant Limit and How to Work Around It

In this article

  1. 01Who actually hits the limit?
  2. 02The product options approach
Shopify allows up to 3 option types per product (Size, Color, Material) and a maximum of 100 variant combinations. For simple products this is plenty. For merchants selling configurable or personalized products, it's a constant constraint.

Who actually hits the limit?

  • Apparel merchants with many size × color combinations
  • Custom print or engraving stores with text input fields
  • B2B suppliers with material, finish, and dimension variations
  • Gift stores that allow personalization across multiple fields

The product options approach

Product options apps work outside Shopify's variant system. Instead of creating true variants for every combination, they capture selections as custom line item properties — which are passed through checkout, visible on orders, and accessible for fulfillment. The storefront experience is identical to a native variant setup from the customer's perspective.
Note
Not all product options apps handle price add-ons correctly at checkout. Verify that price modifiers are reflected in the cart and order total before going live.
